In Cold Blood - Digital Development one - OUGD503

Continuing from hand rendered developments it became apparent that collaging multiple images connected with the book. Taking into consideration the year the murders took place and the year the book was released as inspiration for the aesthetic of the book, this gave helped to chose certain design aspects of the book such as the typeface used for the cover, it was obvious to use a serif font, obvious for the older more traditional feel that a serif gives as well as its use within the crime novel genre. If used correctly a serif font can give a sinister feel which will go with the theme of the book and as well with the imagery used for the cover.

Using Bodoni as it is this type which closely resembles one used in the Kansas newspapers which reported the murders, this used as a clipping mask over one of these papers to create the effect that can be seen (left). The imagery used in this cover is two separate images of the Clutter land, one an image of the house from the year of the murders and the other just after the executions, merged together makes the house look eerier than what it would on its own.
Using the same techniques as the first cover (Above) yet changing the type to Baskerville, a typeface that is more associated to the crime or horror genre than Bodoni, and instead of clipping mask the type with a newspaper clipping, an image of the clutter family has been used, where Mr Clutters face can be seen in the 'od' of the word 'blood'. For the imagery, keeping with the same style as the above cover but changing the imagery to a better image of the Clutter house, better in the sense that it feels more haunting with the dark shadows onto the left side of the house and the bushes growing around it too. The base of the cover which is a colour image of the Clutter farmland seems too bright and does not give the correct aesthetic to fit with the crime novel genre.

The original concept was to make the imagery the centre-piece of the cover and these covers deviated slightly as they are type heavy with it being in the centre of the page, for the next designs the image will be the main focus.
