The brief gives an outline concept to create posters which informs of life lessons and well earned knowledge, we as a group discussed what we had learned and what knowledge we had acquired over the years and a recurring theme that came up was what we had learned on our current course at university, the things we had been taught through tutors, professional visitors, and books read. Discussing this topic it became apparent that each member of the group has had similar similar struggles and learnt the same things through the course, finding common ground and realising that these similarities can form a concept.
Ideas-
- Looking back at criticism of work. Looking at old critique notes of old work, then looking at how these criticisms affected our work and how we learned from these so called 'Failings'.
- Continuing on from the first looking at all the times we've failed because of something we had done through design, something we had been brought up on in module summative feedback from our tutors, especially times we had been able to explain the design decision and why we had done these things which others thought were mistakes.
Looking closer at the 'Rules' of design the group began to think of books read or lessons taught on how to design, considering designers such as Massimo Vignelli, Jan Tschichold, Josef Muller-Brockmann, Arminn Hofmann and others. Vignellis canon is seen as a must read for all aspiring designs, it outlines rules of design and certain things you should never do in design, and though it makes very nice looking design it can kill a creative aspect of design.
- As a group we discussed the things we had been taught, the first things that were sort of drilled into us at the start of university, the stuff we were told to read if we wanted to produce good design. We thought that some of the things we had learnt were things we did not want to do as we felt some of these rules can kill the creativity of the work, and we aspired to make our work using our creative abilities such as, collage, illustration and painting, things which can be disregarded by the 'rules' of Graphic Design.
