I had thought of initial ides of what I wanted to produce for visuals in the brief and so started of by sketching small thumbnails on paper, I tried to produce an arrow style but changing them to easily work as a set and also to be visually pleasing. I began with an idea of a thin line with just one line of the arrow, this would work well as a set yet for pointing upwards it resembles a number 1 which gives off the wrong message and does not communicate what I want to. The idea of the arrow without the stem looked nice but I was not sure how to set out the type so looked more into how it could work.
I looked more at the arrow keeping it thin lines, I ran with this idea attempting all the different types of directions needed, I then realised I needed all the information for these signs, such as;
- Place Name
- Exhibition names
- Floors G,1,2...
- Toilets
- lifts
- cafe
- library
- exits
Some of these would require some pictograms to accompany, for language barrier reasons and also for simple direction giving. I began mocking these up next to the arrows and type. The style of the designs above became to complicated as the different lengths of the text which would be on it, there was no consistency within the design as the size of the arrow or type would have to change every time which would have made the images scruffy when used.
I got to this style of block arrow heads which would hold the type within, yet initially these would be standing within the gallery which would have taken up space and affected the asthetic of the gallery, this idea could work if the style was used on vinyl print stickers which would be placed on the walls of Leeds Art Gallery, I will attempt this digitally to see if it would work. I continued with the thin line style also which is one of the two which I shall attempt digitally.
