Raymond Yiu's 'The Original Chinese Conjuror' focusses on an American Magician who takes on a Chinese persona to boost the popularity of his act. Based on a real-life story of William Robinson, a magician who copied his act from authentic Chinese magician Chung Ling Foo.
The Opera has alot of magic and traditional Chinese clothing, colours, and themes throughout. These aspects are bright playful and relevant to the culture being portrayed in the Opera.
By looking closer at Chinese art and magic I will be able to realize culturally relevant colours, symbols, and shapes that will help form the visual to meet the brief.

Gustav Holsts 'Savitri' is based on a traditional Indian folk story, again another part of Asia is represented in this. Savitri is based on a story from the Indian epic Mahabharata (an 'epic' poem, one of the largest texts written) This means that the tale keeps to its traditional and simplistic routes. The opera is short and contains just three characters (This aspect can be played on in visualizing the opera, 3 colours, 3 forms, 3 aspects, LOOK IF THIS CAN BE DONE IN THE OTHER TWO OPERAS)

Camille Saint-Saen's 'The Yellow Princess' (La Princesse Jaune) is a French Opera set in Holland, about a man obsessed with a Japanese painting of a Geisha, his obsession leads him to have opium-induced illusions about being in Japan. The story plays on the popularity of Japonism in France at the start of the 20th century. It looks at Japanese art and culture from a western point of view. By Looking closer at traditional Japanese art I will be able to get ideas of appropriate colour, image and shape choices to help meet the requirements of the brief.
