OUGD603 - Client/Collab - Red Brick Roads - Design Development

Having sent my initial ideas off to Charlie, the initial reaction was positive but he asked for more experimentation and different ideas of design, also reminding me to keep it simple too. With this in mind I continued to develop both cleaner and simpler designs as well as more complex and outlandish ones, just for variation, and for my own personal exploration into how it could be designed.

I have continued to develop on ideas discussed and go down routes informed by the clients wants/interests and personal style.

Experiments - I decided to experiment with a range of styles informed by a number of things that have become apparent in this brief. Personally I wanted to make the typeface Sporting Grotesk work for the covers, it is a moderately unknown and unusual typeface which I felt would give the album a significance and a unique selling point, I tried this in a number of styles, incorporating the gradient boxes, the red colour type, playing with white space / black space, different layouts and formats.

Choosing which image to choose was a difficult process, obviously for the sake of experimenting any could be used, but I felt each image had a strength and though similar each were significant, so through this I tried to incorporate all the chosen images into it. This is informed by the style used by Frank Ocean - his album Cover for 'Blond' feels like a polaroid image (colour image with white boarder encasing said image - this is something which is popular in modern music design - especially seen through the relevant research). With this photograph/polaroid style in mind I attempted to join all images together on the cover.

Reaction - Comments and feed back of experimental covers (This will help me understand how far the boundaries can be pushed with the album cover and by keeping in constant conversation with the musician I have been able to have regular crits to see if both the musician and myself are on the same page)

- Prefers the Univers typefaces to the Sporting
- Prefers the title track to be in Lower Case (Though will consider upper case or what seems to best fit)
- Would like the type to fit in the image (If Possible)
-Would prefer white space to surround the image (This will both make the image and type stand out better)
- Likes the idea of the single title being the large type and the artist title to remain small
-Likes the small visuals which can accompany the artist name (Underlined / Set in white on black)
-Not too keen on the brick image which we took.

FOCUS ON
-Image with Girl/Image with cyclist
- Red / Lower Case type for the Single Title (LARGE)
- Black/White type for the Artist Name (Smaller)
-White Background (If a Background is needed)
-Experiment with working into the image with type.
