Publication Design skills

For the front of the publication I looked at my research of grid systems and wanted to do a cover which showed an example of a classic grid system used, I chose to use the Marber grid as my inspiration as it was the grid system which I looked at the most in research for the book. The off white and black colour combination was to show a retro style of the time that the marber grid was created and it also showed a basic colour combination which Penguin would use for an informative non fiction book.

For the inside of the book I chose to use a grid of 6x7 is let me arrange type and images in a sensible clear way, where I can use the white space to my advantage. I can centre the type down the middle of the page and have it at a good legible size, with a neat looking page layout which is surrounded by some white space in a good even manner.

The grid enabled me to keep a constant style with the way I organised my type, it kept a steady and easy read for the audience. The grid also enabled me to arrange my images in a clear and simple way, I could fill the page and then put in a smaller image on the opposing page, again utilising the white space to create a clear spread.

To show the Van De Graaf grid I had to change the way I laid out my type, fortunately my grid allowed me to change the positioning of my type around the image keeping it legible and symmetrical across the two page spread. Again the image I have chosen to use an old looking image to keep in the same style.

I used the same styles through out the book re using the grid throughout and the shape of the text. The front page is the same as the back page in a sense it uses colours and the text changes to include, my name and the title of the book too.
