Having decided to design a new British bank note which looks at subcultures of Britain, a more working class style money rather than looking at the monarchy. I felt I should use images which represent the subculture. On one side the image of some mod youths (More common people rather than Mod icons). Using the research from the book 'MODS!' by Richard Barnes, I found images of common mods during, there meet ups, nights out and riding scooters. I found that the Vespa was the vehicle of choice for this subculture and is one of the iconic things from the movement something which I felt could be incorporated into a design. I got a silhouette image of a Vespa Scooter and used an image from Barnes' book to be the start off image for my design, I had to consider the style of the image as I would have to screen print it, I was informed to edit my image in such a way that it would create a clear screen print, this was done by putting the original image through photoshop, changing it to grayscale and bitmapping it, I was told this would mean when I come to screen print the shadows and faces will be picked up clearly, it helped contrast the black and the white. Though I felt that the image would work really well as a black and white screen print, which meant I needed to incorporate colour elsewhere.
Having decided my theme I felt it best to digitally develop more than one idea for my bank note, as I felt I needed to get my theme across further, showing it is not just about Mods or just about Punks. I once again I wanted to use an image of Punks being punks and an iconic image or thing from the subcultures peak times. For example I chose to use the iconic Sex Pistols 'God Save The Queen' Image made by Jamie Reid. I felt that the image of the desecrated queens head would work well, especially if I use it in the position the queens head would normally be used on a banknote. The stock image I used to show Punks is one which depicts them near the police, it shows anarchy and what the punk movement stood for in a sense. Again using the same techniques I used for the Mod imagery I edited the images through photoshop, cropping them, grayscale, and then bitmapping them so that they could be screen printed to the highest quality.
