Ethical Practice - Seminar

Q- Do you think ethics is important in Graphic Design?

A - Yes I do, I feel that it adds structure and reason to what we do as a designer, we have an important role as graphic communicators, we are the people who are visualising messages, it is our job to make sure the right messages are being said. It is easy to sell a product which is not a necessity though is it just and right to do so?

Q - What Defines 'Good' design?

A - 'Good' design is not wasteful or unnecessary, it is honest messages communicated through different means, using methods which do not harm or contradict the message. (Good design would be sustainable and made to last)

Q - What does ethical practice entail in graphic design - What principles?

A - Speaking for someone who does not have a voice or speaking for the masses, a group of people, to inform, interest and intrigue people. It is not misleading and is not dishonest, it should be factual and clear.

- Three principles of design to work to -

- Honesty - Branding, not to mislead clients or audiences, not to bend the rules to sell something.
- Respectful - Avoid Hyperbole, be responsible and always well intentioned.
- Rules - Thou shall not / thou shall - a manifesto of do's and do not's.

- 'The graphic designer is accountable as the marketing and publicity departments for the propagation of a message or idea.

Sustainable development -

Q - How does sustainability relate to ethics?

A - Ethical Practice and sustainability are hands in hand if something is designed poorly and not to last, it is bad design, made to make people buy more and keep a cycle of buy and break, good design will be made to last and be environmentally sound. i.e - packaging, recycling etc.
