OUGD603 Research Brief - Brief - ISTD 'Anniversaries' - Brief One

ISTD - Anniversaries - Task is to choose a subject which can be deemed as an anniversary. This can be as open as desired or more focussed. The brief can be whatever you chose, be clever, challenging, and make connections while always avoiding the obvious.

The target is typographers, Graphic designers, educators, students and disherning members of the public.

Choose a subject which has an anniversary within 2018 - explore this subject and understand it - experiment and develop deep sketchbook research with evidence of your personal responses to the information that you uncover.

Communicate the anniversary with informed typographic responses, be expressive, open, innovative and relevant to the subject matter.

A requirement will be deep sketchbook research with evidence of your personal responses to the information that you uncover. We would like to see lots of potential
directions explored in order to get a sense of your thinking processes and understand how you come to decisions regarding the final outcome. Sketchbooks should be a reflection of your design thinking. They should be colourful, vibrant and organic – full of visual references; notations; sketches; exploration of materials and ideas. They should not be scrapbooks or dissertations and they should not be ‘retrospective’ i.e. ‘Now I’ve finished the piece – time to fill the sketchbooks with photocopies’

Registration Deadline - 23rd of February.

ISTD - Assessment criteria

Submission - 250 to 500 word stratergy of design process and how it implements typographic design to communicate with and influence the specific target audience. It should also express what has driven the concept and its design development - not just a description (be expressive show interest and a wide range of knowledge on the chosen subject) - Write this as if it were to a client.

Each project requires a sensitive use of type and, if appropriate, images. The brief suggests a subtle use of any illustrative content, the solution must be essentially typographic.

Legibility of type to be considered (whether it be Print or Screen based solutions)

Look at topics which are celebrating anniversaries this year. Make it unique and interesting. Take an unknown topic and celebrate it widely.
